Athletics: Wilson heads Otago charge at champs

Lauren Wilson (Queen's High School) sizzled up the Hastings track to win two sprint gold medals yesterday.

Wilson (18) won the senior girls 100m and 200m double at the 38th annual New Zealand secondary schools athletics championships.

The Brent Ward-trained athlete spearheaded an Otago contingent that won a record 30 track and field medals: 13 gold, seven silver and 10 bronze.

Wilson joined Rebekah Greene (St Hilda's), Biddy Skerten (Columba), Kane Russell (Otago Boys') and Anna Kean (Bayfield) as Otago athletes named in the New Zealand secondary schools team.

Greene won the senior girls 1500m by 4sec from Margot Gibson (St Margaret's), but was beaten by Auckland runner Georgie Grgec (Diocesan School for Girls) in the 3000m.

Skerten easily won her specialist 300m hurdles.

Russell demonstrated that he has international potential in the javelin by winning the event with a personal-best throw of 61.51m.

Gavin Stark (Blue Mountain College) won the junior boys 100m and was third in the 400m.

The championships also includes events for AWD ID athletes and Otago athletes excelled.

The most successful was Nikita White (Otago Girls'), who won six gold medals: long jump, discus, shot put, 100m, 200m and 400m. The 200m time (34.99sec) was a New Zealand record.

Matt Aitken (Otago Boys') also broke a New Zealand record in the AWD javelin with 20.94m when he won the gold medal.

He won silver in the discus and completed his set with a bronze in the shot put.

Simon Greene (St Kevin's) won a silver medal in the AWD shot put and a bronze in the 100m.

Silver: Dean Rusbatch (Otago Boys'), senior boys hammer; Alexander Thomson (Taieri College), junior boys hammer; Anna Kean, senior girls 800m; the Otago Boys' senior boys 4x100m relay team.

Bronze: Megan McPhail (Waitaki Girls'), senior girls 100m; Robert Jopp (John McGlashan ), junior boys 100m; Nicole Bradley (Queen's), senior girls shot put; Mackenzie Haugh (King's), junior boys 100m hurdles; Davina Hamann (Otago Girls'), senior girls javelin; Jesse Porter (East Otago), junior boys javelin; Columba College senior girls 4x100m relay team.
