Hill Free event on hold until next year

The Hill Free half marathon scheduled for October has been axed but organisers plan to revamp the event in time for next season.

The popular running and walking event will return in 2017 and will get a spruce-up, Hill City-University Athletic and Harrier Club president Howden Finnie said.

''There is not much more to say, really. We are just looking at some different options with how it is going to work - distances and things like that,'' Finnie said.

''We have a few ideas which have been floated and we'll finalise things in the next month or two.''

When asked why organisers felt they needed to tinker with the event, Finnie indicated it had become stale but declined to elaborate.

''I don't really want that going out to the wider public.''

Finnie said the event had been running the ''best part of 20 odd years ... and maybe longer''.

The Hill Free half marathon is a running and walking race which caters for all ages and abilities. The event has included a 10km run and walk, a 5km run and a 2km run for children under 12.

And, as the name would suggest, there is no slogging up hills. It has been held on the Taieri Plain and around the rural setting of Outram.

Hill Free attracted about 400 participants last year. It is popular with athletes looking for experience or more competitive runners seeking to warm up for other events.

The half marathon and 10km courses are certified, which means they have been accurately measured and any records are considered valid.
