Members of the Otago rugby team and the union’s academy players are all set to take part in the Stadium to Surf run next weekend.

Otago Rugby Football Union strength and conditioning coach Karl Bloxham is using the run as a training exercise for many of the union’s players.

Fifteen to 20 players are likely to take part in the run on March 12. Some of them will run the full 10km from Forsyth Barr Stadium to Hancock Park while others will run the shorter distances of 3km and 5km, which both start at Hancock Park.

Many of the members of the Otago squad are tied up with the Highlanders squad and are unable to take part but other players will be lining up.

The event is organised by Sport Otago, Athletics Otago and the Otago Daily Times and is sponsored by the Athlete’s Foot.

Sport Otago business development and events manager Michael Smith said those who intended to race should get in before the close-off registration date of next Friday.

It was relatively cheap to enter, with $25 for the 10km event, $10 for the 5km event and $5 for the 3km event.

He said those who wanted to enter on the day could still do so but it would cost $10 more.

The event was a chance for any runners or walkers to have a nice day out and the distances catered to any type of athlete.

The shorter races, which start and finish at Hancock Park, would be ideal for the younger runners.

After starting at Forsyth Barr Stadium, the 10km race, which begins at 10am, will go through the harbour area and down Portsmouth Dr before heading down to the beach area and  finishing at Hancock Park.

Smith said with the test cricket on in Dunedin next week the run would be a good way to get the legs going after several days of cricket watching.
