There were plenty of records broken at the Otago primary school athletics championships at the Caledonian Ground yesterday.

A total of 97 schools, 179 relay teams and 839 pupils in total from all over Otago competed.

Nirvana Hepi-Breen, of Balmacewen Intermediate, broke the girls' under-13 shot put record with a put of 9.56m. She already holds records in the previous two age groups that were introduced two years ago.

Nirvana also set a record in the under-13 discus with 34.14m and she also holds the under-12 discus record .

Lucy McLellan, of The Terrace School in Alexandra, set a record of 1.44m in the under-13 girls' high jump. She won on a countback from Jessica Lake, also of The Terrace.

Olive Watherston, of Arrowtown Primary School, set a record in the girls' 13 and over age group high jump with 1.43m on countback from Caitlin McDonald Waters, of Dunedin North Intermediate, who also cleared 1.43m.

Jacob Waide, of Outram, set a under-13 boys' shot put record of 11.4m and also broke the discus record with 28.28m.

Jaxon Thomson, from Silverstream South, set a boys' under-11 discus record of 29.41m, bettering the old mark by just under 10m.
