A shaky start did not deter Shay Veitch from putting on a quality performance on Saturday.

The Ariki athlete jumped 7.67m on his final attempt to claim a convincing long jump win at the Potts Classic in Napier.

It was the fourth-best jump of his career, 13cm off the 7.80m personal best he set in Christchurch late last year.

Veitch had overstepped on his first two jumps, so jumped a safe 7.23m to qualify for three more jumps.

He increased his distance over his final two attempts, comfortably beating second-placed Aaron Booth, who jumped 6.97m.

In the men’s 3000m, which doubled as the national championships, Hill City University runner Oli Chignell came in fourth.

Chignell led in a group with Tauranga’s Julian Oakley and Napier’s Eric Speakman for the majority of the race.

Oakley made a move to open a gap on the final lap, pulling away to win in 8min 0.96sec.

Chignell attempted to go with him, but was passed by Speakman and was then pipped by a late surge from North Harbour Bays’ Matthew Taylor.

Chignell finished in 8min 2.57sec.

In the women’s hammer, Taieri athlete Dyani Shepherd-Oates threw 54.25m to claim third.

She was beaten by a classy duo in Lauren Bruce and Nicole Bradley, who threw 71.38m and 69.92m respectively.

The 100m sprint generated arguably the two most impressive performances of the night.

Auckland runner Zoe Hobbs broke her own New Zealand record by running 11.21sec in the heats, before a wind-assisted 11.14sec in the final.

Canterbury’s Tiaan Whelpton followed up with a wind-assisted 10.09sec in the men’s heats, 0.02sec below Gus Nketia’s wind-legal New Zealand record.

However, the wind meant it did not qualify as a record.

He then ran a wind-legal 10.18sec in the final, lifting him to fourth-equal with Joseph Millar on the all-time New Zealand rankings.
