Winter running season getting under way

Summer is over and the winter running season is set to get under way.

The Three Peaks Mountain Race will be held tomorrow and also includes the Athletics Otago trail running championships.

There are three different races available with the main event beginning at 9.30am at the intersection of Malvern  and Woodhaugh Sts.

An 8.30am start is available for slower runners in the full race.

The full race follows a 26km course which will involve runners reaching the peaks of Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mount Cargill.

The event finishes at Chingford Park and is the race doubling as the Athletics Otago trail running championships.

There will be a cash prize for the king and queen of the mountain, awarded to the first finishing man and woman.

Dougal Thorburn holds the course record, having run 1hr 55min 44sec in 2010.

However, the the records only go back to 2009, as the course was made longer that year.

Stafford Thompson last year ran 2hr 07min 42sec to claim a convincing win.

He was more than 10min ahead of second-placed Chris Bisley.

Mel Aitken was the fastest woman in 2hr 29min 23sec.There is also a team event, in which two runners complete the course, changing over at the top of Swampy Summit.

An 11km race, known as Race the Summit, is to be held in conjunction with the full run.

That will involve both runners and walkers taking the same course to the top of Swampy Summit and  finishing there.
