The annual Edmond Cup, attracting a quality field of 81 runners and walkers, was jointly hosted by Hill City-University, Athletics Taieri and Athletics Otago.
Leith runner Laura Bungard claimed the women’s 8km title in 32min 21sec, stringing out the field and breaking clear of clubmate Kristy Eyles, who finished second in 32min 44sec.
Bungard’s victory continues a strong run of form following her New Zealand representation at last year’s world short-course trail running championships.
University of Otago sports science student Olivia Sutherland completed an all-Leith podium, securing the women’s team title as the club continue their dominance of Otago women’s distance running.

World masters cross-country champion Oliver O’Sullivan and Otago University student Matt Bolter set the pace in the senior men’s 8km, while talented juniors Caleb Dobier and Thomas Weatherall stayed with the lead group through the opening laps before splitting off for their shorter distances.
Dobier pulled away after two laps to comfortably win the under-16 4km in 14min 17sec, while Weatherall claimed the 6km title in 21min 5sec.
Up front, Bolter and O’Sullivan continued to push the pace before Bolter broke clear in the closing stages, crossing first in 27min 43sec, just 3sec ahead of O’Sullivan.
Oskar Ehrhardt completed the podium as HCU edged Leith for the men’s team title.
Leith’s Margie Campbell won the women’s 6km in 23min 48sec, while Caversham’s Eve Kelleher won the open women’s 4km in 16min 11sec.

The under-13 girls’ and boys’ races were won by Arnelle Hamman (Taieri) and Albert Smith (Caversham) respectively.
Caversham rounded out the day by winning the open 6km walk teams title, while Caversham’s Janice Hughes claimed the individual honours in 51min 11sec.
It had been a busy week for several of the secondary school athletes competing, backing up after some solid performances at the New Zealand secondary schools cross-country championships the previous weekend.
Representing King’s High School, Caleb Dobier finished third in the junior boys race, while Thomas Weatherall placed 31st in the senior boys event. Queen’s High School runner Eve Kelleher finished 43rd in the senior girls championship. — Matt Bolter
