Applications for the job closed yesterday and Andrews said the association had received 21 applications.
The appointment panel of Andrews, Di Cater and Craig Hickford will meet this weekend and put together a shortlist.
''We have one guy who listed his previous experience as being a human shield and was taken hostage in Kuwait,'' Andrews said.
''I'm not making that up. It is on his CV.''
More importantly, Andrews believes the role has attracted some very good candidates.
''We are quite pleased in the end with the applications we've got. It could be a tough selection which is really good for us.''
Former general manager Markham Brown resigned in June last year following a review of the organisation's financial performance.
Basketball Otago ceased trading in October later that year having accumulated a debt of close to $180,000.
The organisation appeared to be heading towards liquidation but an agreement to pay 30 cents in the dollar was reached with creditors in May and BBO resumed the reins in June this year.
It has been a testing time and the appointment of a new general manager will signify another positive step in rebuilding the organisation.
All going well the panel will make a recommendation at the next board meeting planned for early December.
''Ideally we will have appointed someone by then [before Christmas] but they might not necessarily be in place by then. It depends on the notice period and whether they have to move down here or whatever.
''We do have a couple from out of town. It maybe the new year before we get someone in the seat.''
• BBO's annual general meeting will be held at the Edgar Centre on December 15.
