Basketball: Fifth win in row for surging Saints

The Saints (7-7) kept marching during week 14 of the senior men's competition at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

The surging side beat the Bombers (7-7) 92-70 for its fifth win on the trot to place it firmly in the playoff picture.

Nugget James Ross dominated for the Saints as he has done whenever he has played in the local league this year.

He finished with 18 points from the point guard position but focused mainly on creating mismatches for his wing-men.

Cain Falconer knocked down many jump-shots from long range to finish with 25 points, and Damon Cleverley notched 12 more for the Saints, who now have all the momentum in the race for third alongside the fading Bombers.

The Bombers loss represents another hit deep in the season, and they have now won just one of their past six contests.

Steve Robinson again top-scored in a losing effort with 26 points, but it never looked close to being enough, as Chris Hepburn was the next-highest scorer with 15.

A strengthened Magic (8-6) won its third straight contest by dispatching the Falcons in a classy first-half performance.

Magic guard Hayden Miller saw endless space and finished with 23 points, while five of his team-mates also scored in double-digits.

Adam Wheeler was not one of them, but he was a large reason for there being such a high number.

The loss drops the Falcons, who have the second stingiest defence in the league, down to fifth.

Otago Boys' High School (12-2) proved too strong for the Comets (2-12) in the day's first fixture.

OBHS prevailed 92-66 after leading by 26 points after three quarters.

Sam King had a game-high 29 points, Murray Clarke added 16 and Ben Dick finished with 15 for OBHS, which now looks far stronger than the team that has already dominated the league this year.

Another early end to the Nuggets season resulted in most teams being near full strength.

The Falcons and Comets each have a game in hand.
