The Auckland Pirates have been unveiled as the newest franchise to join the National Basketball League (NBL).
They replace the Auckland Stars, owned by former New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin, who folded last year due to financial difficulties, and lift the number of NBL teams to nine.
The Pirates will be coached by Kenny Stone but their playing roster has not been announced.
NBL chairman Sam Rossiter-Stead today said the addition of a new league team showed determination and commitment on the part of the Pirates.
"Putting together a new franchise from scratch in these tough times is an extremely difficult task and we have been impressed with the dedication shown by all of those driving this project forward," he said.
The Pirates' first league match is against Otago in April 13.
Pirates general manager John McGregor said the team were keen to present a top lineup on and off court.
