The Otago Nuggets are going to be working overtime to get ready for the 2025 season.

They have named a coach, Mike Kelly, who is expected to arrive in the city in mid-February.

But that has been the only official news.

The Nuggets have not made public announcements about any players, although the Otago Daily Times understands work has been done behind the scenes and a solid core of local players have committed to return.

They do not include centre Jack Andrew, who is understood to be moving north to join the Taranaki Airs, and forward Robbie Coman, who is thought to be heading to Melbourne.

That means the bulk of the Nuggets roster needs to come together rather late.

Their opening game of the season is against the Southland Sharks in Dunedin on March 14, so time is running out.

The Sharks have been busy recruiting, so they have a significant head start.

American Jonathan Yim has been appointed coach, taking over from Australian Guy Molloy, and has seven confirmed signings for 2025.

Alonzo Burton, who captained the team last season, is returning for a fifth season and will be joined by Johnny Helu, Tukaha Cooper and imports Keylan Boone and Caleb Asberry.

Forward Hayden Collier is the latest signing, and former Otago centre Sam Timmins has also inked a short-term deal with the Sharks.

But the Nuggets are not the only team chasing a buzzer-beater.

The Auckland-based Indian Panthers, who will join the league this season, have no coach or players listed on their books.

Coach Sam Gruggen returns for a second year with the Hawke’s Bay Hawks but has not made any player announcements yet.

The Tauranga Whai still have plenty of work to do. They have signed guard Jayden Bezzant and import Sean Bairstow, and coach Matt Lacey returns for a second year.

The rest of the teams have made more progress.

The Wellington Saints have some impressive talent in place. Shea Ili, Hyrum Harris and Izayah Le’afa are among the most notable signings.

The Auckland Tuatara, who were beaten in the final last season, welcome back the likes of Rob Loe, Tom Vodanovich and Dan Fotu, while Cam Gliddon will pick up the coaching reins.

The Canterbury Rams are back-to-back champions and have confirmed Taylor Britt, Max Darling and Walter Brown will return.

The Manawatū Jets have lured Nuggets guard Dontae Russo-Nance north.

Tony Webster has been named Jets coach which means his sons, Corey and Tai, could pop up in Palmerston North as well.

The Franklin Bulls have 10 players on the roster, including Ethan Rusbatch and Tobias Cameron.

Andrew is expected to join the likes of Carlin Davison, Scott Telfer and Dom Kelman-Poto at the Airs.

The Nelson Giants have registered a handful of players as well. Mike Fitchett returns for a sixth season as coach.
