Bowls: Aiming for northern heights

Dunedin bowler Duane White (Forbury Park) will be tested at the International Singles event in Blackpool next month.

It will be the first time he has competed in the northern hemisphere and his first-round opponent is John Price, of Wales.

The World Bowls Tour was started in 1979 and the first indoor world championships was won by the renowned David Bryant (England). Price won the world indoor title in 1990 and has won 10 Welsh titles and a Commonwealth Games silver medal.

It will not be easy for White to beat the experienced Welshman in the red-hot atmosphere of the Blackpool indoor arena on February 5.

''I'm going into the unknown but I intend to make the most of it,'' White told the Otago Daily Times.

''I'm focused and am going into it with a positive attitude.''

White has prepared well on the Forbury Park outdoor green that runs at a similar pace to the Blackpool indoor rink.

''I have spent a lot of time on the green and have practised and practised over the last few months.''

He has the credentials to knock over Price - he was the top-ranked bowler in the New Zealand Professional Bowls Association last winter and made his international debut in the Trans Tasman PBA. White was a key member of the New Zealand team that won the PBA test series at East Cessnock.

He displayed his big-match temperament when he beat former Australian world singles champion Steve Glasson 11-5, 9-8 in two sets to put New Zealand on the winning path in the test series.

White (44), a member of the PBA for seven years, came of age last year when he topped the New Zealand PBA ranking.

He has talked about the problems he will face in England with Ken Walker and Mark Watt, who have both competed in the United Kingdom on the World Bowls Tour.

A problem faced by overseas bowlers is that they must use the bowls provided by the organisers of the competition.

''We have a choice of bowls to pick from,'' White said.

''Ken told me to use the old-style bowls with a wide draw.''

The new-style bowls that keep their line are not suitable to use on the English indoor rinks.

Bart Robertson (North Harbour), New Zealand's representative at the world indoor singles at Potter's Leisure Resort, lost his first-round game to Darren Burnett (Scotland) 9-4, 12-3. This was the third occasion on the World Bowls Tour that Burnett had beaten a New Zealand bowler. He has yet to drop a set against any of his Kiwi opponents.
