The Black Jacks dominated the first test of the Trans Tasman bowls series when they won six of their eight disciplines. It included a clean sweep in all of the men's events.
"We are happy with day one for sure," national coach Dave Edwards said. "The men's performance was outstanding and I think it is fair to say that it is not often one country beats another 4-0." The combined men's and women's results from day one at Lockleys Bowling Club, in Adelaide, saw the Black Jacks win six out of eight games.
The largest margin of the day was an 11-shot lead by Shannon McIlroy in the men's singles over Australia's Leif Selby.
The New Zealand combination of Tony Grantham, Matt Gallop, Ali Forsyth and Richard Girvan won the men's fours 20-10.
The pairs and triples were closer contests.
New Zealand won the pairs 19-15 and the triples 13-11.
"It was a fantastic performance," Edwards said. "They deserved their 4-0 win."
With a 27-shot lead, the men are looking in a strong position to claim the Trans Tasman trophy at the end of the three days.
The women's competition was close, with each country winning two matches. Those the Australian women lost were epic battles. The Black Jacks won the pairs by one shot. The fours team of experienced players Jo Edwards and Jan Khan and newcomers Lisa White and Mandy Boyd were a lethal combination as they beat Australia 17-14.
Val Smith's singles game against Karen Murphy was a toe-to-toe start before Murphy pulled away to win 21-11. Jan Khan, Lisa White and Mandy Boyd lost the triples 19-11.
