North East Valley became the only Dunedin team to reach the national finals of the New Zealand Community Trust bowls championships when its team won the regional fours final on Monday.

The team of Colin Wheeler, Greg Cash, Jim Scott and Terry Scott was unbeaten in its five games on the St Clair green.

It won the contest between the top clubs from the six centres in zone six with 10 points and was followed by North Otago 6 and Southland 4.

This is the third time that North East Valley has qualified for the national fours finals. It won the New Zealand finals in 2003 and contested it again in 2006.

Terry Scott is the only survivor from the 2003 team. The other members of that team were Steve Beel, Shaun Scott and Stephen O'-Driscoll.

It is a strong team this year, with the Scott brothers both former New Zealand representatives. Terry has won 32 Bowls Dunedin titles, Jim 18 and Cash 15. Newcomer Colin Wheeler has won two.

Wheeler was the lead who put early bowls close to the jack during the competition. Cash consolidated the position and made a few drives and Jim Scott played the telling shots when they were needed.

Terry Scott added the bonus shots and played weighted shots to change the head when it was needed.

North East Valley beat South Canterbury 19-17, South Otago 25-11, Central Otago 20-14, Southland 26-8 and North Otago 11-9.

The Clinton four of Diana Tweed, Loma Mathieson, Glenys Bell and Wynette McLachlan won four of their five games to win the women's event for South Otago with eight points.

They were followed by the Geraldine team of Marion Patrick, Monika Morgan, Pam Shirtcliff and former New Zealand representative Bett Prattley from South Canterbury on 6 (differential plus 10) and Alexandra from Central Otago on 6 (differential minus 4).

South Otago beat South Canterbury 19-18, North Otago 20-9, Southland 19-15 and Central Otago 15-14. It lost to Dunedin 20-8.

Before the last round, South Canterbury had led with 6 points (differential plus 21), with Central Otago with 6 (differential minus 3) and South Otago 6 (minus 4).

In the final round, Southland beat South Canterbury 20-9 and South Otago held on to beat Central Otago 15-14.

Max Grey (Green Island) won the Bowls Dunedin junior singles title when he beat Craig Ellis (North East Valley) 21-6 in the final.
