It was a nostalgic homecoming for Elaine Anderson-Wright when she played in the national bowls championships this week.

Anderson-Wright (70), who has lived on Queensland's Sunshine Coast for the past 16 years, grew up in Invercargill and was a teacher at Opoho and George Street Normal Schools in Dunedin before shifting to Australia. She also lived in Central Otago.

She previously returned to Dunedin for the national women's championships in 2002.

Anderson-Wright started bowls with the Arrowtown club 25 years ago and has won two Central Otago titles.

She has won five district titles in Queensland.

''I enjoy it there because you can play bowls for 12 months of the year,'' she said. ''I enjoy meeting people and bowls is my social life.''

Her pairs partner is Linda Morish (60), who plays for the Pine Rovers Club in Brisbane.

It is one of the biggest clubs in Brisbane and has 200 female and 400 male members.

Morish is also a retired teacher and started playing bowls at Noosa Heads 15 years ago. She was runner-up in the Australian triples last year.

New Zealand world champion Peter Belliss had a big influence on her career when he was coach at the Noosa Heads club, where she started in the sport.

''Without doubt, I would attribute my bowls success to Peter,'' she said. ''He was a gentleman on the green and I liked his attitude. He was also a master tactician.''

Morish enjoys the competitive nature of bowls.

''It is always a challenge.''

This is the first time Morish has played in a New Zealand bowls championships.

''But it is not the first time I've come to New Zealand. This is my third visit this year. It is my favourite country.''
