Bowls: Outdoor skills demonstrated

The Webster family excelled indoors and are now making their mark in outdoor bowls as well.

Two members of the family have reached the final rounds of the Bowls Dunedin champion of champions singles.

Carolyn Crawford (St Clair) will play Lynn Rance (Green Island) in the women's final and her brother, Ray Webster (St Clair), will face Robbie Thomson (Fairfield) in the semifinals of the men's champion of champions singles.

Crawford has played outdoor bowls for more than 20 years and has won 20 Bowls Dunedin titles.

She teamed with Ann Muir (Northland) to win the pairs title at the New Zealand championships in Dunedin in January.

Webster has played for New Zealand and has won 14 Otago titles in indoor bowls. ''I'm excited for Ray,'' Crawford said.

''He has only been playing outdoor bowls for three years.

''Its nice to have a brother coming to the top in outdoor bowls. He has put a lot of work into his bowls.''

Another brother, Harley, has also started playing outdoor bowls.

Crawford, and fellow New Zealand champion Anne Muir (Northland), will be playing in the Dunedin Casino Invitation pairs at the North East Valley Club today.

The other men's semifinal is between former New Zealand singles champions Shaun Scott (North East Valley) and Ken Walker (Taieri).

The games will be played at Taieri on March 15.
