Otago Daily Times ''delivery girl'' Shirley Cosgrove was allowed to sleep in this week to prepare for the national championships.

It was a welcome luxury from the grind of getting up at 5.30am in all weather conditions to put the paper in Belleknowes letterboxes.

Cosgrove shares the daily paper round with husband Kevin, who this week volunteered to do the whole delivery himself while his wife stayed in bed a bit longer to get the energy to play two days of pairs at the New Zealand championships.

Her pairs partner, Anne Lillie, also works for the Otago Daily Times but did not get any time off to prepare for the championships.

She works the night shift in the factory and managed to get three hours of sleep after work before heading to the bowling green.

They came into the pairs competition with high expectations after being part of the Mornington club team that won the Dunedin B grade event and advanced to the regional finals in Oamaru early last year.

It was the first time that any Mornington team, men or women, had advanced to the regional round of the national interclub event.

Cosgrove and Lillie are members of the Mornington fours team that will play in next week's fours competition with Isobel King and Irene Cron.

The other members of the Mornington interclub team are Patsy Hanna (singles) and Bev Johnson and Jan Oliver (pairs).

Cosgrove was talked into starting bowls by friends 15 years ago.

''I enjoy the company of the other women,'' she said. We have lots of laughs.''

Lillie has played indoor bowls for 15 years and has won one Otago title in that sport.

She started outdoor bowls 11 years ago.

''I like socialising and meeting different people,'' she said. ''Bowls is all about having fun with other people.''

The pair are playing in only their second national championships and enjoyed the experience, even if they failed to win any pairs games.

They have another chance next week when section play in the fours starts.
