Bowls: Scott continues top form in Adelaide

Shaun Scott, of Cromwell, continued his good form in Adelaide this week and was a key player in the Zealand triples team that remained unbeaten at the Asia-Pacific bowls championships yesterday.

The team of Tony Grantham, Scott and Ali Forsyth completed its unbeaten run in section play when it beat the United States team of Loren Dion, Ian Ho and Steve Nelson 16-7.

The New Zealand team has also beaten Japan 17-9, Canada 18-10, Malaysia 13-10, Norfolk Island 22-8 and Singapore 22-13.

The triples team topped its pool and will advance to the semifinals later this week. Scott also qualified for the semifinals of the singles. It is a superb effort by Scott, who is playing in his first major international tournament.

These performances by Scott must have cemented his place in the New Zealand team for World Bowls that will be held on the same greens in Adelaide next year.

The other unbeaten New Zealand team was the women's four of Leanne Curry, Genevieve Baildon, Jan Khan and Jo Edwards, who completed section play with a 14-10 win over Maisarah Aminuoin, Noor Zafirah Noor, Emma Saroji and Azlina Arshad (Malaysia).

The New Zealanders have also beaten Singapore 30-6, Canada 21-16, Hong Kong 29-10, Fiji 20-10 and Norfolk Island 23-10.

Defending women's singles champion Val Smith kept her semifinal hopes alive when she beat Rosita Bradborn (Philippines) 21-18 in a nail-biting finish yesterday.

The men's pair of Dan Delany and Richard Girvan also kept their semifinals hopes alive when they beat the Philippines 14-11.

• The Kaikorai Bowling Club is holding the 57th annual Dunedin Festival Fours from January 6-8 next year.

The event was started by the Kaituna club in the 1950s and Kaikorai took charge when the Kaituna club went into recess six years ago.

Three rounds of section play will be played on the first two days on the Kaikorai, Wakari and Green Island greens.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and final for the Festival Cup, the plate and the Consolation Cup will be played on the final day.
