Bowls: Scott rises to family tradition

It seemed natural that Sarah Scott (North East Valley) would play bowls, because it has been the family sport for three generations.

Scott (30), a Dunedin administrator, is the daughter of Terry and Donna Scott. Her aunts and uncles and her grandparents all play the sport.

She had two years of bowls when she was a pupil at Kavanagh College but did not play for eight years after that.

''I never felt that I had to play the game,'' Scott said.

''But when I came back after two years overseas, I started the game and liked it.''

Her big inspiration has been her father, Terry, the coach of the Black Jacks, who has given her a series of timely tips.

The teams for the Dunedin Casino Classic pairs were drawn by lot on Wednesday night and Scott joined up with fellow Bowls Dunedin Sevens player Janet Swallow (Taieri).

They won their four games at the North East Valley green yesterday and booked themselves a quarterfinal berth.

''It is the first time we have played together,'' Swallow said. ''We suit each other and it has worked today.''

Their most difficult game was their first, against Kim Gawn (Taieri) and Sue Hodges (Taieri), which they won 12-10.

The game was even at 6-6 after six ends and was still locked at 9-9 after 13 of the 15 ends. Scott and Swallow were one down before the final end but added three shots to win.

They then beat Rebecca Jelley (North East Valley) and Trish Marr (St Clair) 19-7, Liz Tomlins (Invercargill) and Dale Bourke (North East Valley) 20-12 and Noreen Paul (North East Valley) and Faye Cosgrove (Green Island) 19-11.

The other unbeaten team was Faye Cosgrove (North East Valley) and Jean Young (Taieri).

Sandra Keith (Dunsandel), the winner for the past two years, teamed with fellow New Zealand champion Christine Buchanan (Queenstown), was also unbeaten.

However, they had a hiccup when they drew their first game 13-13 with the Alexandra combination of Lyn Somerville and Linley O'Callaghan.

Keith led 13-8 after 11 ends but the Alexandra pair came back by scoring five shots on the last four ends.

Avis Rishworth (South Otago) and Vicki Robinson (North East Valley) started impressively, winning their first two games, but stumbled on their last two and were beaten 28-8 by Buchanan and Keith in their last game.

Post-section play begins this morning and the final is expected to start at the North East Valley green at 2.30pm.
