Former international Eileen Grant was in dominant form and played a key role in South Otago's win in the 20th annual Southern zone women's eights at the weekend.

South Otago won its third title in Invercargill with 117 points and was followed by Southland 116.5, Otago 110.5. South Canterbury 98, Central Otago 49.5 and North Otago 48.5.

Grant, who won her 25th South Otago title in the mixed pairs this month, was the player of the tournament. She won the Sandra Gould Trophy with 25 points from a possible 30 points.

This was the fifth time Grant had won the trophy after wins in 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

She was followed by Marilyn Holmes (Otago) with 24 points, Colleen Fenton (South Otago) 23, Marilyn Paterson (South Otago) 22, Stephne Joyce (Otago) and Honorine Orchard (Southland) 21.

The other South Otago bowler in the top 10 was Shona Preddy who finished seventh-equal with 20 points.

Grant and Fenton were also in the 2007 winning team. For the rest of the team it was their first Southern zone win. Fenton has been selected in the South Island Academy team to play the North Island next month.

Southland led South Otago by four points after four rounds, but South Otago came back strongly in the fifth and final round and dominated the split round of singles and pairs.

South Otago last won the annual team event that was first held in 1998 in 2007. This was its fourth title as it also won in 2000 and 2002. It has finished runner-up nine times.

Other Southland players to finish in the top 10 were Carolyn Ferris and Jean Stratford who gained 20 points.

The third-placed Dunedin-based Otago team had four players in the top 10. The others were Tracey van Tuel and veteran Lyn Rance, who was playing in the event for the 20th time. They scored 20 points.

The best South Canterbury bowler was Christine Shand with 20 points. Ev Bisset was the best Central Otago bowler with 13 points while Lynne Porter and Diane Strachan shared top spot for North Otago with 12 points.
