Mike Howard ended his indoor bowls season on a high note when he won the pairs at the 56th annual Alexandra Blossom Festival tournament at the weekend.

The Oamaru plumber and drainlayer and his Oamaru club partner, Andy Blakeley, convincingly beat the experienced South Otago combination of Christine King and Marilyn Paterson 11-2 in the final.

It has been a good season for Howard (61), who won the Jackson Trophy awarded for most points in North Otago events during the winter.

His best performance at national level was to reach the semifinals of the singles at the Clubs New Zealand national championships in Christchurch.

Howard has been playing indoor bowls for 25 years and has won 21 North Otago titles.

Blakeley, who reached the last eight in the triples at the Clubs New Zealand national championships, was a consistent lead during the pairs in Alexandra.

The popular tournament is one of the longest-running indoor bowls events in the country and always attracts the best bowlers from the South Island.

There were 42 teams in the pairs and Howard and Blakeley beat the experienced South Otago combination of Eileen and David Grant 10-8 in a closely fought semifinal.

In the other semifinal, King and Paterson beat Eileen and Pater Carnie (Southland) 9-6.

The Southland pair beat the Grants 4-2 in the play-off for third and fourth.

The fours was won by Neville Gould, Kylie Gould, Ruth Gould and Deborah Ruffell (South Canterbury), who beat Colin Robson, Kevin Hurley, Ev Bisset and Gloria Hurley (Central Otago) 12-8.

In the semifinals, South Canterbury beat Mat Begg's Central Otago combination 12-3 and Robson beat Peter Carnie (Southland) 11-2.

In the third place play-off Begg beat Carnie 5-3.

The Ken Hinton Blossom Festival Trophy for the best performance by Central Otago bowlers was won by Kevin and Gloria Hurley.
