Solid wins before interisland clash

The South Island indoor bowls team has strung together three solid wins in as many days on its North Island tour as it prepares for today's clash with its North Island counterparts.

It won its fifth match of the tour against Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay 26-22 with the best performances coming from the women's pair of Southlander Suzanne Mackie and Jenny White, from Canterbury, who recorded three wins.

The South Island squad made the best start, winning six games in the first round before the opposition clawed back five games in the second round. The third and final round was halved.

Earlier in the day, the mainlanders conducted a promotional workshop with 52 children.

The next day, the team continued on its winning way with a 28-20 win over a Bay of Plenty team at Rotorua.

The victory was sealed after the first two rounds when the South Island squad won 11 games to five. In the final round, the southerners claimed just three matches to the Bay of Plenty's five.

It continued this string of wins with a convincing 31-17 victory over a Wanganui side on Wednesday night.

It lost its final tour game against Manawatu 20-28 at Palmerston North on Thursday night.

Its overall tour record is four wins, one draw and three losses.

New Zealand Indoor Bowls publicity officer Delwyn Hughes said the team was gaining in confidence and building a good team spirit for the interisland test.
