Kasib Murdoch took a break from accumulating New Zealand titles to add an Australian one to his collection.

The 16-year-old boxer won the junior 60kg class at the Australian Golden Gloves tournament in Brisbane last weekend.

The Kaikorai Valley College pupil beat three-time Australian champion Ah-Wong Lokene by decision in the final.

Earlier, he defeated New South Wales champion Logan Slis in the semifinal.

The teenager is the best boxer in his age-group and weight division in New Zealand. He has won back-to-back national titles in the cadet division and will look to add the junior title to his brag sheet at the nationals in Rotorua later this month.

His trip to Brisbane was wonderful preparation and his coach, Bryan Usher, said it was the best performance he had seen from his young charge.

"He boxed the best I’ve ever seen him box," Usher said.

"He improved and did everything I asked of him.

"He has an extremely high work-rate and that is a definite strength.

"He works very well on the inside and has very good footwork and head movement.

"And on this occasion he tightened everything right up and it was like he improved twofold over night."

Fellow Hammerhead boxer Baden Oxley returned with a golden gloves title, as well. He won the 64kg elite class with a first round stoppage, while stablemate Matt Crawford was runner-up in the 56kg elite division.
