All-rounder Kasperek returning for Canterbury match

Otago will welcome the return of key all-rounder Leigh Kasperek for its round of matches against Canterbury beginning with twenty20 match at Molyneux Park today.

Kasperek was ruled out last week with a lower leg injury and missed the opening round of domestic games.

"She is back and that rounds us off a bit better," Sparks coach Warren Lees said.

The White Ferns spinner has had a disappointing start to the summer with a finger injury ruling her out of the tour to South Africa and the home series Pakistan.

She will be looking to make up for some lost time, and Otago will need the 24-year-old near her best if it is going to match a talent-laden Canterbury side which includes White Ferns run-machine Amy Satterthwaite and aggressive opener Frances MacKay.

"They know how to time an innings. They don’t come out blasting people all over the park; they get themselves in. And once they are established they are very hard to dislodge.

"Those two are pretty important for them but they just have such a strong group.

"When you look at all the other teams, they might have one or two outstanding players. But Canterbury is way ahead of most teams and that is why you have to play well to beat them and that is what it is all about."

Canterbury’s twenty20 match with Wellington was rained off last week but it did win both one-day games, and the defending twenty20 champions shape as the team to beat again this season.

Two of Otago’s three games against Central Districts were washed out. But the wet weather cleared on Saturday and the teams were able to get through a one-day match which the Sparks won by three wickets.

It was closer than Lees would have liked but he urged his side to chase the bonus point and that resulted in a few more wickets falling than expected.

There were some promising signs, though. For the best part of a decade the Sparks have relied on Suzie Bates and Katey Martin to do the bulk of the scoring and they both contributed to the win on Saturday.

But Millie Cowan emerged as the star. She bowled 10 overs into the breeze and picked up four for 31.

Filled with a new-found confidence, she then played a instrumental role with the bat, adding a valuable 29 to get the Sparks through a tough period.

England international Beth Langston was impressive in her debut. She bowled with real heat and took two 22 from 10 overs.

"She is very, very good. A serious professional who takes the game very seriously."

Following today’s twenty20 fixture, the Sparks will play Canterbury in back-to-back one-dayers at Molyneux Park this weekend.
