Cricket: Cumming's ton equals record run

Otago captain Craig Cumming equalled Glenn Turner's record of four centuries in a season for the province when he hammered a ton against Canterbury in Christchurch yesterday.

The right-hander (34) has had a summer to remember and enhanced his reputation as one of the best openers in the country with a fine innings of 176.

Turner scored four centuries in back-to-back seasons for Otago - in 1974-75 and 1975-76 - and is Otago's fourth-leading run-scorer with 4439 runs at 46.72.

Cumming's innings took his first-class runs this season to 787, the second-highest by an Otago batsman in a season, behind the 1027 runs Turner scored in 1975-76.

It was Cumming's 15th first-class century and 13th for the province.

Turner also scored 13 hundreds for Otago.

Only Bert Sutcliffe (17) and Ken Rutherford (14) have scored more for the province.

Cumming also overhauled Noel McGregor's career tally of 4259 runs.

He is now the sixth-leading run-scorer in Otago first-class history with 4316 runs.

Sutcliffe tops the list with 6028 runs.
