The first day of the cricket test between New Zealand and England at the University Oval has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Umpires Paul Reiffel and Asad Rauf informed the teams of the decision at 4.15pm.

Persistent drizzle and dark skies led to most of the crowd fleeing the ground earlier in the day.

Play will start at the earlier time of 10am tomorrow, weather permitting.

Earlier, New Zealand won the the toss and elected to put England into bat.

Otago's Ian Butler will carry the drinks for New Zealand with Tom Latham missing out on the 12.

For the visitors, Monty Panesar will play with fellow spinner Graeme Swann ruled out of the test series with an elbow injury.

He will fly to the United States next week for an operation and hopes to return to competitive cricket by the early English summer. Swann will be replaced in the squad by James Tredwell.

Jonny Bairstow is 12th man for England.
