Cricket: Junior cricket teams' showdown

Taieri Gold marched to the top of the Dunedin junior premier cricket competition with a comprehensive win over Taieri Blue at Memorial Park on Saturday.

Both teams had plenty riding on the result.

The Blues needed to win to force their way into the top four, while a win for the Golds - coupled with other results falling their way - meant they could join Albion Wilson at the top of the table.

Taieri Gold batted first and, despite losing wickets regularly, managed to reach 131 for seven off 32 overs.

Captain Tommy Wilson held the team together with a solid 32, while Shaedon Miller scored a run-a-ball 21 at the top of the innings.

Wickets were shared among the Blues' bowlers with Beckham Greenall, Finn McDonald-Page and Mason Cumming taking two apiece.

The Blues' hopes of winning were soon dashed, when an opening bowling spell from Shaedon Miller and Tommy Wilson left them reeling at 13 for four.

Xavier Wright (28) and Daniel Thom (18) produce a 49-run partnership to give the Blues' score some respectability but the team was eventually dismissed for 81.

Tommy Wilson took three wickets and Shaedon Miller two.

The Gold team plays Albion Sutcliffe in a semifinal on Saturday.

The Blues will be looking to end the season strongly and claim fifth spot in the competition.

It has been a successful season for Taieri's players, with many featuring prominently in the Dunedin premier competition's statistics.

Tommy Wilson tops the batting with 403 runs at an average of 80.8 and Beckham Greenall is second, with 345 (ave 57.5).

Max Meffan (267 runs ave 29.67) and Shaedon Miller (214 ave 23.78) are also in the top 10.

Sean Davidson is second in the bowling stats with 17 wickets (ave 10.53) and Beckham Greenall fourth with 14 wickets (ave 10.43).
