Cricket: King 'delighted' with team

Otago coach Nathan King has finished putting together the team behind the team and is rather pleased with the outcome.

Former Otago offspinner Simon Forde has been confirmed as the assistant coach, and prominent Dunedin lawyer James Lovelock will manage the side.

Two of the province's most successful players - batsman Craig Cumming and seamer Warren McSkimming - will provide specialist batting and bowling advice as required.

King, who took over the role from Dimitri Mascarenhas when the former English international was promoted to Black Caps bowling coach earlier this year, was thrilled with the support staff he had been able to assemble.

As a rookie coach, he had highlighted the need to surround himself with a good team.

''I am delighted to be able to confirm these appointments,'' King said.

''[They are] all quality people and when you add them to Adam Keen (strength and conditioning), Natalie Fraser (mental skills) and James Montgomery (physio), we have a quality group who are all committed to helping the players be the best they can be.''

Forde was an offspin bowler and useful batsman who played 10 first-class games and 20 one-dayers for the province between 1999 and 2001.

He also had a long stint as Otago selector when Black Caps coach Mike Hesson pulled the Volts' reins.

Forde is a detective with the New Zealand Police and will be taking six months off to make himself available for the role.

''I've been involved for a long time now and I'm just wanting to increase my skills and get involved more. It seemed like a good time to me,'' Forde said.

Forde will not travel to all the Volts' away games but will assist during home fixtures and at training sessions. Part of his role will be to ensure the wider squad is working hard while the Volts are out of Dunedin. He will also lead the Otago A side.

Lovelock has been a selector since 2011. He filled in as manager when former coach Vaughn Johnson left the side towards the end of the 2013-14 season and also managed the side during the Champions League in 2013.

Cumming and McSkimming will be called in for input as needed. Some of the finer details of those arrangements still had to be worked through, King said.

Cumming is a former Otago captain and the province's leading scorer. In 95 first-class games for the Volts, he scored 6589 runs at an average of 43.34, including an Otago record 21 centuries.

McSkimming also enjoyed a rich career for Otago. In 67 first-class games, he took 238 wickets at an average of 24.40, including 11 five-wicket bags. He is one of only nine players to take 200 wickets or more for the province.
