The spoils were shared evenly but off-spinner Nathan McCullum claimed the coveted cricketer of the year title at the Otago Cricket Association's awards at the University Oval last night.

The aggressive right-hander shouldered more responsibility with the bat this summer and pushed his claims as a genuine all-rounder.

In the State Championship, he scored 361 runs at an average of 36.10, including posting his maiden first-class 100. He also picked up 17 wickets at 37.35.

In the one-day competition, McCullum averaged 27.37 with the bat and took 14 wickets at 32.92.

A nimble fieldsman, McCullum pulled off some athletic stops and took some superb catches to complete the package.

He was selected in the Black Caps squad which contested the Twenty/20 World Cup in South Africa last year along with leftarm seamer Bradley Scott, who picked up the bowler of the year trophy.

Scott took 31 first-class wickets at the miserly average of 19.77 and took 16 wickets at 28.75 in the one-day competition.

His ability to tie down an end has drawn the attention of the national selectors and he is a strong candidate for selection in the Black Caps side to tour England when it is named this morning.

Gritty top-order player Greg Todd won the batsman of the year cup.

Batting at No 3 this season the dogged left-hander was one of the Volts most consistent runscorers totalling 576 runs at 44.30 in the four-day tournament.

Aaron Redmond's superb work in the slip cordon was rewarded with the fielding trophy.

Katey Martin dominated the women's awards, winning the batsman, fielder and cricketer of the year award.

Sparks captain Sarah Tsukigawa won the bowling award.

Otago men' coach Mike Hesson won the coach of the year and Brendon McCullum received the Murray North Trophy for outstanding individual performance by an Otago player during the season after smashing 170 in the final of the State Shield.

Former OCA chairman Stuart Heal received the outstanding contribution to Otago cricket award.
Heal has been the chairman since 2002 and stood down last year.

OCA chief executive Ross Dykes said Heal's ‘‘enthusiasm and positive attitude'' had been ‘‘a driving force on the board''.

He was instrumental in establishing the University Oval as the association's home ground and played a big part in attracting test cricket back to the city.
