Cricket: NZ need 494 to win at close of fourth day

Sri Lanka have declared their second innings at 311 for five on the fourth day of the second cricket test at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground here today, setting New Zealand a target of 494 to win the match and square the series 1-1.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara, who departed in the morning session for 109, ended the second innings once Mahela Jayawardene was dismissed for 96.

Jayawardene, who made 92 in the first innings, was seeking to become the first player to record 10 test centuries on the same ground.

Jayawardene also made 92 in the first innings.

Seamer Iain O'Brien dismissed Jayawardene for a second time in the match and finished the innings with figures of one for 77 from 15.2 overs.

Spinners Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel took two wickets apiece.

Sri Lanka won the first test in Galle last week by 202 runs.
