Tillakaratne Dilshan was on 26 and captain Kumar Sangakkara 16 after Sri Lanka opted to bat first.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori claimed the wicket to fall, Tharanga Paranavitana for 19, to be one dismissal away from completing the 300-wicket/3000 runs test cricket double.
