Carisbrook-Dunedin 164
beat Albion 135 by 29 runs

Medium pacer Richard Sillars took four wickets and made an important contribution with the bat to help Carisbrook-Dunedin beat Albion by 29 runs at Culling Park.

Sillars captured the key wickets of Taylor Cumberland (8) and Josh Tasman-Jones (0) as Albion slumped to 19 for four in reply to Carisbrook-Dunedin’s total of 164.

Albion captain Jack Harper (35) and Daniel Duke (56 from 44) led the fight back with a fine stand of 87 for the fifth wicket. The pair were threatening to take the game away from Carisbrook-Dunedin until Duke, who had smacked four sixes and five fours, holed out on the boundary at mid-off.

Harper was run out shortly after and the chase stopped at 135 when Sillars picked up his fourth, nicking off the No 10 batsman.

Earlier, Anjas Bhogal (26) and Michael Bracewell (27) added 50 for the second wicket to get Carisbrook-Dunedin off to a reasonable start.

Michael Snedden was hitting a good line and length for Albion and batting was challenging. He eventually finished with four for 46 from 18 overs, while Harper also claimed four quick wickets in a short stint at the crease at the end of the innings.

But Sillars (34) and Taine Bayly (42) provided substance and their partnership of 61 proved crucial in mounting a total which was probably below par but ended up being enough.

Green Island 241 for nine declared
beat Kaikorai 143 by 98 runs

Otago all-rounder Christi Viljoen played a starring role in Green Island’s comprehensive 98-run win against Kaikorai.

The game shifted from Bishopscourt to Sunnyvale and the new home side took advantage of familiar surroundings to build an imposing total.

Opener Gregor Croudis posted a patient 64 from 120 deliveries and combined with Ant Harris (52) in a stand of 77 for the third wicket.

Viljoen capitalised on the platform with an undefeated 78 from 68 deliveries. He really teed-off ahead of the declaration. In all he hit five sixes and eight fours and a lot of them were very pleasant shots down the ground.

The rest of the Green Island batting line-up was not able to contribute much, and Ryan Whelan and Hamish Robertson were able to take three wickets apiece.

Kaikorai’s reply ran into immediate trouble with impressive left-armer Blair Soper ripping out both openers with just nine runs on the board.

That said, Kaikorai got batsmen established at the crease with Rhys Bayly (24), Josh Finnie (20) and Geordie Scott (35) all getting decent starts.

The fact none of those batsmen were able to go on helped pave the way for Green Island’s victory. It was Viljoen who pounced, removing Finnie and Robertson in the 15th over, before picking up the dangerous Scott to finish with three for 28.

North East Valley 116
lost to Taieri 117 for nine by one wicket

Taieri needed just two to win with one wicket in hand when Warren Barnes swung the ball away in the air.

It hung in the clouds as North East Valley’s Ruan Markram ran around from deep midwicket to deep square leg. But having got to the ball he put the catch down.

Barnes survived and Taieri clinched the win. It was a tense finish to a low-scoring game. Barnes’ undefeated 27 proved instrumental.

Earlier, he had taken four for 32 to help dismiss North East Valley for a paltry 116.Barnes and Jack Hunter (three for 13) got the ball to hoop around at Memorial Park but there was also a lot of poor batting by Valley.

Hunter Kindley (29), Otago wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder (17) and Tom Griffin (17) provided some resistance. The target looked a long way off after Taieri had crashed to 20 for four. Bailey Andrews-Kennedy took four for 34 and Jamie Murley three for 37. But a good partnership in the middle and Barnes’ effort at the end proved just enough.
