Trent Boult reckons the Black Caps just keep getting better.

It is certainly hard to argue with their home record this summer.

Boult led the Black Caps to an emphatic 183-run win against Pakistan with a five-wicket bag at the University Oval on Saturday.

The left-armer produced a masterful display of seam bowling. His stunning haul of five for 17 proved instrumental in skittling Pakistan for a paltry 74.

The visitors had slumped to 32 for eight and were at risk of lowering their worst ODI score of 43.

The win means New Zealand has clinched the series with two games to play and has extended its winning streak to 10 consecutive games across three formats.

The Black Caps also remain unbeaten at the University Oval in six ODIs and eight tests.

"It seems like the guys are just putting in better performances as we get deeper into the season," Boult said.

"The West Indies have come and gone and we knew these guys were going to be a challenge. But we’ve continued on that form."

New Zealand posted 257 after it had been on track for a much higher score.

Kane Williamson top-scored with 73 but laboured early before starting to find his touch late in his innings.

Martin Guptill made 45 at the top of the order, and Tom Latham played some nice shots in a run-a-ball 35.

Ross Taylor, who will play his 200th ODI  tomorrow, was in fine nick during his knock of 52.But the Black Caps lost seven wickets for 62 runs in the last 10 overs and Pakistan went into the break with more momentum.

"You think it looks like a good wicket and 250 is probably a bit on the light side," Boult said.

"We knew we had to defend it well. Not just with the ball and the intensity we set with that, but you could see it in the field.

"It was awesome. The guys were up for it — it was a great performance."

The bowling effort was backed up by some excellent fielding. Taylor nabbed three sharp slip catches — two off Boult’s bowling. Williamson took a scarcely believable catch to remove Hasan Ali, and Mitchell Santner scooped the ball up in the outfield and whistled in a throw to help run out Babar Azam.

His bat had dug into the ground but he might not have made his ground anyway.

The wickets were tumbling so rapidly Boult could barely believe the scoreboard.

"To get them six down for 16 was pretty crazy, but testament to us bowlers not releasing [the pressure] from either end.

"We’re playing an exciting brand of cricket at the moment and this season  seems to be getting stronger and stronger."

While the Black Caps trounced Pakistan, the team sets itself high standards and it was not happy with the last 10 overs of its innings."

We want to keep wickets in the tank to accelerate at the end. Today wasn’t that day. To lose seven wickets is not in the game plan, that’s for sure.

"But it probably describes the wicket nicely. It was hard to go out there and boom it.

"It was a little bit slow and a little bit uneven in the bounce.

"I’m sure it will be something that we assess — and will be a department we are trying to tidy up."
