New Zealand’s youngsters had a rough day out at the under-19 World Cup in South Africa at the weekend.

The Baby Black Caps suffered a 10-wicket shellacking at the hands of Pakistan in East London. They mustered just 138 in 38 overs and were helpless as the Pakistani openers chased down the total inside 26 overs.

New Zealand top-order batters Oliver Tewatiya (29) and Tom Jones (14) got starts but it was up to Lachlan Stackpole (42 off 37 balls) to give the innings much respectability.

Neither of Otago’s young men could offer much help: Zac Cumming fell for three off 20 balls, and No11 batter Mason Clarke scored six.

Ubaid Shah, younger brother of test bowler Naseem Shah, led Pakistan with three for 30 off nine overs.

Pakistan’s reply was brutally effective.

Shazaib Khan (80 not out off 86 balls) and Shamyl Hussain (54 off 66) bashed their side to victory in double-quick time.

Clarke took none for 18 off three overs, and Cumming none for 27 off three.

New Zealand still qualifies for the Super Six stage.
