Otago beaten again despite lower-order resistance

The summer of woe which is the Otago first-class season continues to spawn defeats.

Otago tried valiantly in Napier yesterday to save the game against Central Districts but it was not to be.

It ended up losing by an innings and five runs as it scored 335 in the second innings.

The visiting side resumed yesterday morning on 124 for one wicket, needing to bat all day in order to save the game.

It lasted until just before tea, and there was some stubborn resistance by the lower order.

But Otago's biggest problem - and there have been a few this season, one would have to say - was an inability to put together any partnerships in the top order.

Josh Tasman-Jones lasted five balls on the fourth day before he was dismissed by Ajaz Patel.

Otago then lost three wickets in the space of 10 runs as Mitch Renwick, Josh Finnie and Michael Rippon all departed.

Hamish Rutherford was at the other end the whole time, chipping away at his score.

He made it through to 99 but unfortunately could not make it to three figures.

He attempted to glance the ball behind square to bring up his ton but succeeded only in putting the ball straight into the hands of Will Young.

Skipper Jacob Duffy came in and hit a couple of lusty blows but was soon gone and Matt Bacon went shortly afterwards.

The final-wicket partnership between Nathan Smith and Warren Barnes was worth 73 runs and Smith continued to show his promise, unbeaten on 75 when Barnes was dismissed.

Smith hit 42 runs in boundaries. Smith and Barnes, who scored 34, both registered their highest first-class scores.

Patel took four wickets for CD as the the rest of the wickets were shared around.

The result is Otago's sixth straight loss of this first-class season and the seventh in a row if you count last season's loss to finish the 2017-18 season.

The side is in a slump - there is no understatement there but a lack of runs has really hit the team hard.

Its next match is against Wellington at the University of Otago Oval starting on Saturday.

In Whangarei, the match between Auckland and Northern Districts meandered to a dull draw. Auckland batted out the last day and made it through to 249 for sixs, not getting far enough ahead, quickly enough, to set a target.

In the other game, Canterbury beat Wellington by nine wickets in Christchurch. Canterbury was set a target of 127 after Matt Henry took nine wickets in the match for the home team.

2CD is top of the table while Otago is bottom, 33 points behind fifth-placed Wellington.
