Otago Country faces uphill battle

Canterbury Country made quick work of Otago Country’s batting innings in day one of the Hawke Cup Challenge.

The challenge got under way with a delayed start at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora yesterday due to rain.

The Tussocks elected to bat first and were in trouble early, falling to 20 for two in the 13th over.

Otago Country was eventually all out for 123 in the 46th over, with Michael Goldstein (26) and Steve Hobson (21) the top-scorers for the visitors.

Canterbury Country bowler Blake Coburn picked up figures of three for 21 and Jesse Frew was also handy with his two for 22.

When the home side went in to bat openers Archie Redfern (39) and Rhys Mariu (22) set a good early platform, and Canterbury Country finished 61 without loss at the end of the first day.

The Hawke Cup challenge resumes at 10.30am in Rangiora today.
