What do we go with — Phillips gets the job done or Bacon on a streak?

Both are equally appropriate.

And both are sins which get you sent to cliché prison.

Oh well.

Dale Phillips and Matthew Bacon shared the spotlight for Otago in Invercargill on Saturday.

The pair teamed up to help the Volts post a 42-run win against Auckland in the Ross Dykes Memorial at Queens Park.

Phillips stroked his maiden list A century, and Bacon grabbed his maiden five-wicket bag in the format in a complete performance from a Volts side which has struggled in the opening rounds of the Plunket Shield.

Otago was inserted and punched out 302 for six.

Phillips was the standout with 107 from 99 balls.

The 25-year-old right-hander brought up his hundred with a crisp drive through extra cover for a boundary.

He also clobbered four sixes down the ground in a nicely-paced knock.

His 128-run partnership with Thorn Parkes (51) for the fourth wicket formed the backbone of the innings, but Hamish Rutherford (44) and Luke Georgeson (31) put on 80 for the opening wicket to set a solid platform.

Max Chu whacked an undefeated 25 from 12 at the death to push the Volts past 300.

Coach Dion Ebrahim said the innings followed the game plan down to the last detail

"It was great to start the [one-day] campaign off with a win but more importantly the way we actually played was even more impressive," he said.

"I thought we executed our blueprint down to the T."

The Volts got the base they were hoping for at the top of the innings. There was a big partnership in the middle. And a player went on to get a big score. That is the recipe for a big score every time.

"Dale has shown a real maturity this season. He arrived at the beginning of the season with a number of, I won’t say lofty goals, but clear goals in mind.

"And over the last couple of months we’ve just been really focusing on the process in terms of him achieving those goals. And I guess that is showing in terms of his consistency."

Phillips has scored half-centuries in the past three first-class games, so had a good run of form leading into the opening Ford Trophy game.

But the second half of the match belonged to Bacon.

The 30-year-old right-armer had to rally back from an early Finn Allen onslaught. Allen slammed three fours in the opening over.

Bacon replied by dotting him up for all six balls in his next over.

He also secured the first breakthrough when George Worker chopped on for five.

Jacob Duffy interrupted the 103-run partnership between brothers Will O’Donnell (83) and Robbie O’Donnell (43) when he bowled the latter.

Then Bacon turned on the middle and lower order to help dismiss Auckland for 260.

He finished with five for 38

"Matthew came back from what was a really challenging first over. He adjusted his line and length but he also came back in latter spells and utilised all his skills and craft.

"His success was the product of a real clear and smart game plan and the execution was an outstanding effort."

The other major success belonged to the venue. Queens Park was removed from the domestic schedule in 2021 due to drainage issues.

But those problems have been rectified and Ebrahim said the facilities were "outstanding" and the pitch "provided good levels of competition with both bat and ball".

In the other two Ford Trophy matches, Canterbury beat Wellington by 63-runs in a low-scoring encounter at Hagley Oval, and Northern Districts edged Central Districts by 28 runs in Nelson.
