Pitches of concern

Senior club cricket is scheduled to move to grass wickets this weekend but concerns about the suitability of the pitches may result in the fixtures played on artificial turf.

Dunedin Cricket Association (DCA) operations manager Tim O'Sullivan confirmed the association was aware of concerns about the readiness of the facilities.

''Our members have expressed concern and we have asked the council to make sure that they are happy with the facilities they have in place,'' O'Sullivan said.

The weather played a big part in whether club cricket could be played on grass wickets at this time of the year, O'Sullivan said.

''We have a process in place with [the council] every week, not just at this time of the year, and they technically have until 4pm Friday to say yes or no to our bookings. We generally make a plan B every week.''

Plan B is to shift the fixtures to artificial wickets but O'Sullivan said it was too early to say whether the grass wickets at Tonga Park and Bishopscourt would be available.

The contract to maintain and prepare the city's grounds has been split this year. Delta was awarded the contract to prepare the grounds in the northern half of the city, and City Care has the contract for the southern half.

Asked if the DCA had any concerns about the preparation of the grounds under the new arrangement, O'Sullivan said discussions with the councilsuggested ''the facilities would be of a better standard''.
