University of Otago vice-chancellor Grant Robertson will take a spot on the board of the Otago Cricket Association.

The former deputy prime minister and minister of sport is a confessed cricket tragic and a champion for women’s sport.

He will bring considerable clout to the board.

Robertson has been appointed alongside Nicki Paterson, the School Sport New Zealand national partnership manager and former long-serving Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association director, who will also be in her first term.

Liane Topham-Kindley and former Black Caps and Otago spinner Nathan McCullum were reappointed for a third and second term respectively.

Otago stalwart and Otago Cricket Association life member Warren Lees replaces Stuart Heal as president, while Nick Smith will continue as patron.

The OCA reported a small loss of $5089 for the financial term at its annual meeting last night.

Chief executive Mike Coggan, in a press release, reflected on what he felt was a satisfactory financial result.

"Our small loss is seen as favourable against a board-approved much larger loss budget," he wrote.

"We have been able to improve our balance sheet cash position (to $563,536), this being essential as we continue to invest in community and domestic cricket programming and high-performance infrastructure and continue to navigate uncertain future revenue".

OCA chairman Russell Mawhinney thanked Heal for his service and acknowledged the governance work behind the scenes.

"I would like to thank my board for the time, thought and effort that is applied," he said in a statement.

"I would particularly like to publicly acknowledge the work of Stuart Heal, who steps down from the role of president, having completed his four-year term.

"Stuart, your love of the game, experience and sound advice have been greatly appreciated, and we have been fortunate to have you attend most board meetings over your tenure".
