Scenarios aplenty as T20 playoffs begin

There are countless scenarios that could pan out in the Super Smash playoffs.

Could the Northern Brave women win their first T20 title?

Could the Auckland Hearts secure their first title in 12 years or will the Wellington Blaze produce a three-peat?

Could the Auckland men win their sixth title?

Could the Canterbury Kings win their first T20 title in 20 years or will the Brave men win their third in five years?

That all begins this afternoon when the elimination finals get under way at Hagley Oval before the finals at the same venue tomorrow.

In the women’s competition, the defending champion Blaze are already through to the final, leaving the Hearts and the Brave to battle for the final spot.

The Hearts have momentum after a gritty victory over the Central Hinds to leapfrog them into the top three.

They have only finished one game against the Brave — their opener was washed out after three overs — where the Brave snatched a one-wicket win.

It sets up an intriguing elimination final between the two.

In the men’s competition, the Brave are through to the final, leaving an old fashioned Auckland-Canterbury battle to steal the last space.

They have split their two games this season. Canterbury had a 17-run win on January 10 and Auckland won by nine wickets four days later.

In the earlier game, Black Caps opener Tom Latham flicked 55 off 32 and Matt Boyle added 52 off 33.

Auckland batter Bevon Jacobs gave his side a chance with 88 off 45 and Cam Fletcher — who is unavailable for the finals as he awaits the birth of his first child — crunched 80 off 50 as they chased 217.
