Volts seeking to reinstall Ross Dykes Memorial Trophy in their cabinet

Auckland have it.

Otago want it.

The two provinces will compete for the Ross Dykes Memorial Trophy at Eden Park Outer Oval tomorrow.

Dykes, who died in 2020, spent 10 years in Dunedin in his role as chief executive of the Otago Cricket Association.

The former Auckland wicketkeeper made a major contribution to the development of the University Oval as an international venue.

He also had a long stint as a national selector. He served in the role from 1990 until he moved south in 2005.

Dykes played 31 first-class games and eight one-dayers for Auckland.

The Aces are the current holders and will go into the fixture with some confidence.

They dispatched Northern Districts by six wickets in their opening Ford Trophy fixture.

They have stuck with the same 12.

Otago have also resisted making changes despite being well beaten by Canterbury in their opener.

They stumbled through to 206. New recruit Jack Boyle top-scored with 64, while gloveman Max Chu (36) and captain Luke Georgeson (32) made useful contributions.

Former Volts Angus McKenzie and Michael Rippon collected three wickets apiece.

Henry Nicholls made short work of the run chase. He stroked an unbeaten 117 from 125 balls.

The game will also mark the first opportunity for Dale Phillips and Danru Ferns to have a crack against their old side.

Phillips made the switch from Otago to Auckland this season, while Ferns made the move down from Auckland.

Phillips played 54 list games for Otago, scoring 1334 at an average of 29.64. Interestingly, he has plundered the Auckland attack over the years, clouting 466 runs at an average of 51.77.

Ferns clocked 49 list A games for the Aces before joining the Volts. He has picked up 17 Otago wickets at 24.58.

Both players have transferred to the provincial team they have enjoyed the most success against.

In the other games today, Central Districts host Northern Districts in New Plymouth and Wellington are at home to Canterbury.
