Dunedin schoolgirl Jordan Donaldson just failed to win her third successive North Island BMX title at Rotorua at the weekend.

Jordan (10) was beaten by Australian Ruby-May Hoad in the final.

The key on the course was to get to the front on the first jump and lead at the first corner. Ruby-May did this and Jordan was not able to pass on the final corner and lost by half a bike length.

There were 600 riders competing at the championships, including competitors from Australia and Japan.

Jordan's form impressed the selectors and she was named in the five-strong team that won the Nelson Brothers Racing trophy.

Jordan, a pupil at St Leonards School, has been racing BMX for four years and is the most talented Otago rider. She was third at last year's world championships.

Jordan trains at the Forrester Park track three times a week and is a regular at club nights each Thursday.

She is coached by Ted Lucas, of Invercargill, who was named the South Island coach of the year in 2009.

His daughter, Summer Lucas, finished runner-up to two-time world champion Tarlia Hanson, of Rangiora, in the girls aged 13 event.
