Competitors and spectators alike said the wet weather could never stop them from showing up.
Kim Richards, of Alexandra, said the wet conditions should not have much of an impact on the events. She competed in the open women’s barrel race.
"The arena was resurfaced a couple years ago so it holds up pretty well with the rain," she said.
This rodeo season is the first Ms Richards and her 14-year-old horse Spur are competing in together.
"It’s been pretty good so far, today I’m just hoping for a good clean run," she said.
The Wānaka rodeo is part of the South Island Christmas circuit which consists of five rodeos, in which competitors can earn points towards national titles.
The club was formed in 1963 and is supported by volunteers and sponsors in the Upper Clutha area and beyond.
Lexi Cuthbertson, of Christchurch, who attended the event with her family and friends from Wānaka, said they would have come no matter what the weather was like.
"Sun, rain or hail we would be out here watching. It’s a great day out for the boys.
"The rain didn’t put us off at all," she said.
Alpine Street Machines president Steve Swift said the Wānaka Rodeo was great value for the town.
"People come out to the rodeo but they also go out for dinner and stay in local accommodation."
Mr Swift said the rodeo arena could hold up to 6000 spectators. About 5000 people attended last year and organisers are expecting similar numbers this year.
"The rain might slow some down, but people still come out," he said.
