Dunedin rider Katie Schofield has just missed out in a medal at a world cup meet in Colombia.

Schofield teamed up with the newly returning Natasha Hansen in the team sprint and proceeded to qualify in front of some more established combinations.

Hansen was making a return to competition after last being sighted at top level at the London Olympics.

Schofield (29) produced her best start of the season in 19.055sec, which was fifth-best among all competitors, before Hansen came home in 14.547sec for a combined time of 33.602, the fastest time set by a New Zealand women's sprint team.

The duo watched as top seed Great Britain, Australia and China went slower, to promote New Zealand into the medal ride-off for the first time.

The pair took on Spain in the ride-off for bronze and clocked 34.028sec, which was not quite good enough.

Schofield, who is based in Cambridge, had a busy day, qualifying 16th in the women's sprint in 11.444sec but was beaten in the first round of elimination racing.

Olympic medallist Simon van Velthooven also impressed. In his first world cup competition of the season, he finished fifth in the final of the men's keirin.

The Manawatu rider was third in his opening heat but fought his way back by winning the repechage.

He was second in the second-round clash behind Fabian Puerta Zapata from the host Colombia, although he did not get any openings in the final when he had to settle for fifth.

Southland rider Cameron Karwowski was leading the omnium going into the final race, a points race, on the final day of the meet.

Karwowski won the 1000m time trial in a world-class 1min 1.921sec and then topped all riders in the flying lap in 14.936sec. This catapulted him into the lead in the competition, with the pivotal points race to come.

However, he was unable to go with the key breaks and finished in 12th place which left him in sixth overall, but only eight points from a place on the podium.
