My Team: Everton

A weekly series revealing the club allegiances of English football fans.

Peter Carey
Taxi Driver
Everton

Fan since: For 50-odd years.

Favourite player: Alex young.

Greatest moment: The 1996 FA Cup final, when Everton came from 2-0 down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2.

Been to Goodison park?: Yes.

I was born in Liverpool and I remember my father taking me to my first game at Goodison Park. I think we were playing Fulham.

That's going back in time. Fulham had that bloke Johnny Haynes, the first player on 100 a week.

I went to Goodison all the time in my younger days. Always had a season ticket.

And I saw some of our greatest players. There was Alex Young - the "golden vision" - Roy Vernon, Brian Labone, Alan Ball . . . they were magnificent. Young was before his time.

When I was 15, I went away to sea in the merchant navy. In 1966, Everton played Sheffield Wednesday in a famous FA Cup final. At that time no-one had come from 2-0 down at Wembley and won. And Everton was 2-0 down.

I was on the Pacific on my way out to New Zealand and I'd saved up all my beer ration. We had these wirelesses that could pick up the BBC and the football.

Everton won the game 3-2 and as a result of my celebrations, the crew were all woken up. The captain of the ship fined me two weeks' pay.

I came to New Zealand in 1963 for the first time on the ships and I've been out here permanently since 1972.

I'm a taxi driver and I only work night shifts. On a Saturday night, at 3am in the morning, Hills AM changes over to the BBC and you get up to date with all the scores.

I couldn't go to bed on a Sunday morning without knowing the results. I've tried it but I just toss and turn.

We're off to an uncomfortable start this season. We've bought no players and that's a concern. David Moyes is a great manager, no doubt about it. But he's struggled to get the finances.

His achievement last season was absolutely brilliant and I've got no doubt he'll come up with the goods again. Finishing in the top four is the ultimate aim.

We want to play in the Champions League, but it seems you've got to be owned by a sheikh or a Russian to get there.

No other team has played more games, scored more goals or been in the first division longer than Everton. We're very proud of that record.

They call us the people's club, and I agree with that. But it's a shame to hear Everton are thinking about building a new stadium. Goodison's got so much history and it would be a shame to lose it.
