It was a tough weekend for the southern teams in the Southern Football League.

All three succumbed to losses against Mainland opposition, two by large margins on the road.

Queenstown FC got the weekend under way in Nelson against Nelson Suburbs, but was undone 5-0.

A horror first half cost Queenstown, the side conceding four goals before the break.

Suburbs dominated play early and two goals to Ryan Stewart, as well as one to Edward Sillars, put the host up 3-0 after 30 minutes.

Queenstown fought back towards the end of the half, but a mistake gifted Stewart his third goal.

That fightback continued in the second half, although the visiting side was unable to break through.

Suburbs added a fifth goal through Alex Ridsdale, who played the second half of the last year’s national league with Southern United.

At Tahuna Park, Dunedin Technical gave up a lead to go down 2-1 to Ferrymead Bays.

It took until the 60th minute for a goal to come, as Stephen Last found the net off a corner for Tech.

That lasted 11 minutes, before Ferrymead Bays equalised from a corner when Nikolai Molijn was able to scramble one in off the rebound.

Aidan Barbour-Ryan nearly put the visiting side ahead in the 83rd minute, but was called back for offside.

However, that was made up for by Sho Mathieson, who got on the end of a long free kick to make it 2-1 in the 89th minute.

Cashmere Technical were too good for Southland United, claiming a 4-0 win in Christchurch.

Lyle Matthysen put the home side up 1-0 after 25 minutes, before Tom Schwarz doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute.

That duo was instrumental again after halftime, each scoring a double to claim a comprehensive win.

In the all-Christchurch game Nomads United scored in added time to beat Coastal Spirit 4-3.

The result leaves Nomads on top of the table, on eight points.

However, second-placed Cashmere is just one point behind and has a game in hand.

Nelson Suburbs jumps to third on six points, while Dunedin Tech and Ferrymead Bays are both on five.

Coastal Spirit remain on four, while Queenstown on three and Southland on zero round out the table.
