Southern thriller ends in frustrating draw

It was a fitting ending, although it was not the one Southern United wanted.

A 10-goal thriller was not decided until the 93rd minute in Invercargill yesterday.

Chloe Knott scored to take the Northern Lights to a 5-5 draw in the national women's league.

It left both sides undefeated and lifted Southern to the top of the table on seven points.

However, it just as easily could have reached nine.

After it struggled to put away its chances last week, the goals flowed freely this week.

Three times in 30 minutes it found the back of the net in the first half, before an Amy Hislop brace took her season tally to four.

But Northern always found a response.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring in the fourth minute via Helena Kelderman, before Southern responded two minutes later.

Shontelle Smith curled a corner in off the back post to equalise, before Mikayla Gray got on the end of a through ball to take a 10th minute lead.

A Smith corner lead to the next goal, as well.

She found Kirsty Hayr on the back post for the side to take a 3-1 lead at the 31-minute mark.

But Northern hit back on either side of halftime.

Hannah Carlsen managed to loop one over Southern keeper Jade Middleditch from long range on halftime.

And Kelderman equalised after a good build-up five minutes after halftime.

Hislop put a penalty into the top right corner on 60 minutes, but Northern hit back 20 minutes later through Lily Jervis.

Hislop again put Southern ahead in the 85th minute, finding the top left of the corner from outside the box.

But Northern hit back to snatch the draw in added time.

Coach Ignacio Sande said the final goal had been "very tough", although conceded Northern deserved a point.

There was a "little bit of frustration" from the team that it could not hold on, although it was happy with the performance.

He said the attack was very good, although there were still things to work on.

"We're in a very positive moment.

"It's good to know we can score, after the last game when we missed so many chances in front of the goal.

"Coming into a game and saying we can score - and Northern's a top team."

In other games Auckland drew with Capital 3-3, while WaiBOP beat Central 3-2.
