Southern Utd buzzing about playing in front of home crowd

Southern United fans have had a long wait for the team's next home game - but that is nearly over.

It will be 42 days since the side's previous home game when it steps on to Sunnyvale Park to play Tasman United on Sunday.

Included in that was the two-week Christmas break, as well as a game in Wellington and two in Auckland.

That is a long time and the 2-0 loss against Canterbury United on December 10 does seem a while ago.

Coach Paul O'Reilly said the side was buzzing to play in front of its home crowd again and expected it would lift the players in more ways than one.

''The last two away games we've had to leave at 7am, we're not arriving at the ground until 12 or 12.30,'' he said of the difference a home game makes.

''So it's probably a good four to five hours of actual travel time.

''So I think the players will enjoy their lie-in on Sunday morning. It just makes it a little bit easier in terms of preparation.

''As well, playing at home does give you that little bit of extra incentive to get an extra two or three percent out of yourself.

''You're always trying to win your home games and that'll be the plan on Sunday. We'll be looking to try to get three points.

''Whereas realistically sometimes on the road you're going away to places like Auckland and Wellington making sure you don't concede and making sure you're not beaten.

''So slightly different approach this week and I definitely think the players will be looking forward to it.''

While the past three rounds had been a tough run, it left Southern with five home games in its last seven.

That was exciting for the team, but it knew it still had to perform well to earn its points.

With the league table very congested, O'Reilly said Sunday was crucial for the team.

Southern is in eighth on 12 points, two points behind sixth-placed Tasman.

A win will be important in keeping in the mix to achieve its goal of a top-six finish.

The injury bug has hit again, though.

Alongside Garbhan Coughlan - who will definitely miss the game with a broken arm - the team may be without two of its stars.

Danny Furlong continues to struggle with a back injury sustained against Hawke's Bay United in November.

He missed last Saturday's game against Auckland City and would undergo a late fitness test to assess his availability to play Tasman.

Captain Conor O'Keeffe will also be a late decision, having injured a calf against Auckland City.
