Golf: Borren one off best total

Otago golfers Nick Borren (Otago) and Inia Logan (Wakatipu Junior) featured in the New Zealand strokeplay championship on the Shirley course in Christchurch over Easter.

With rounds of 72, 68, 74 and 72, Borren finished one off the pace on 286, while Logan (17) was not far behind with a four-round aggregate of 290.

Luke Toomey (Riverside) won his second title but not without a tight finish when he beat Jonathan Cane (Royal Wellington) in a playoff after both players tied on 285.

It was the second win for Toomey, who played No1 for the Waikato team which beat Otago in the final of the interprovincial in Invercargill in December.

In the women's event, Chantelle Cassidy, of Waikato, secured her second national title.

Meanwhile, Oamaru teenager Jonathan MacKay made a statement to the Otago under-19 selectors in posting the lowest scores in the Queenstown and Arrowtown junior championships during Easter.

MacKay shot 74 at Kelvin Heights on Sunday and 1-over par 71 at Arrowtown the following day.

However, he had to accept second at Arrowtown after an encoding error on his card gave Liam Hewitt (Queens Park) first place.
