It is nearly six years since Mark Brown's greatest achievement, but his goal remains the same every week.

Just win.

At 39, Brown is no longer the wide-eyed rookie on tour, nor the antsy newcomer desperately searching for the next cheque.

The world No 298 has his eyes firmly set on the trophy at the New Zealand Open this week.

''Winning is the main reason why you play. I've been around a bit, so perhaps these tournaments become a bit more important to win.''

''To me, winning is everything. Every week. This tournament, especially. It's the Open, so for us it's a huge week.''

Brown, whose career highlight was winning the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2008, is in reasonable nick, having finished sixth (Victorian PGA) and 14th (Queensland PGA) in recent weeks.

He skipped the Victorian Open so he could come to Arrowtown early to get to grips with both The Hills and Millbrook, co-hosting the New Zealand Open for the first time.

''I'm sort of looking at it as three courses, because the new nine at Millbrook will be quite different,'' Brown said.

''A lot of homework has been packed into a few days.''

Brown finished fourth in the New Zealand Open at Clearwater in 2012, and was second in the New Zealand PGA at The Hills the same year.

He enjoyed the pro-am aspect of the latter tournament but said he was ''neutral'' about it being introduced to the Open.

''Commercially, it's about whatever it takes. We're playing for more prizemoney, which is great for the field.

''For a national open, preferably not. But it is what it is. I'm still looking forward to it.''

Brown has some conditional status on the Web.com Tour and will head to tournaments in Chile and Brazil after Arrowtown.

''Hopefully I can make a cheque and play more on that tour.''
